Press Release

For my Introduction to Professional Writing class, I wrote a press release modeled after my dream career. The dream career I chose to model my press release around was to be working in PR or communication for the NHL team, the Pittsburgh Penguins. I wrote this press release about an event that already happened as a result of winning a first-ever award. I chose to write the press release from the viewpoint as if this event had not yet occurred.

My press release contains the intention to convince a journalist that this story is worthy to write, in order to announce the game to not only the local community but also to hockey/sports around the world. The purpose of the writing is to make the War Memorial arena look good and also Kraft Hockeyville for the donations to make this game possible. It is going to draw in a crowd to the event, spread the word about the upcoming game, and also raise awareness of Kraft's new competition to be held annually. This piece will interest hockey/sport fans, other teams that play in the War Memorial that will benefit from the rink upgrades, Pittsburgh Penguin fans, and the local residents of Johnstown.

This particular press release will have many new values that will appeal to the journalists if they were to read it. Having recognized these news values shows off my skills and knowledge of press release writing. The news values it would contain would be impact, proximity, timeliness, novelty, and even celebrity. It contains impact because the event results in some road closings which will relate to the traveling audience. It has proximity because it is a local event for the people that live in Johnstown. It relates to timeliness because I wrote it as if it is a current event that is about to happen. Novelty is involved because it is an event that is different considering it has never occurred before. The final news value it contains is celebrity, being that the Pittsburgh Penguins are a famous NHL team, which generate a variety of die-hard fans. I would hope these news values could encourage a journalist to publish a piece of writing about the upcoming event.

If published I would chose to send this story to outlets, such as local print (newspapers), TV news and commercials (e.g. WJAC), and also local radio stations (e.g. Froggy 95). Another useful way to get the word spread would be to have it printed and/or electronically distributed to local high schools (e.g. Richland School District), the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, and Penn Highlands Community College. The more outlets this story could reach would be better in making the event successful.

KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE WINNER TO HOST NHL PRE-SEASON GAME

War Memorial Arena Welcomes the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning

Johnstown, PA, March 4, 2016– The Kraft Hockeyville USA competition has already granted their winners with a 150,000 dollar award towards arena upgrades and are ready to leave their final mark on Cambria County.

On March 29th many fans and members of the Johnstown community will gather together to enjoy their favorite sport in their favorite ice rink. On this unique day there will also be other events occurring, consisting of favorite player signings before the game, a live big screen game viewing during, and a small concert performance post-game.

The newly upgraded arena is ready to attract hockey fans from all over to gather together to enjoy the NHL pre-season game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game will be aired live on NBCSN at the end of the month, March 29th.

The NHLPA Executive Director, Don Fehr commented on this opportunity saying “It will be great for the players on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning to play before passionate local fans in Johnstown… We also congratulate these two finalist communities.”

Johnstown is a great location for this event to be held and to draw in a numerous amount of die-hard fans. In history, the Cambria County War Memorial Arena was home to the filming of the legendary movie SlapShot. This makes Johnstown the perfect, iconic location to host the very first Kraft Hockeyville, NHL pre-season game to ever be hosted.

NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, said “Kraft Hockeyville USA makes a lasting contribution to a community that has come together ‘For The Love Of Hockey,’ and we are particularly pleased that future generations of Johnstown players will be able to enjoy skating at an upgraded Cambria County War Memorial Arena.”

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the community that cannot be missed. Fans and the community are encouraged to come check out the action that will be taking place in Johnstown on behalf of Kraft Hockeyville USA.
