As I close in on the end of my junior year at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, I look forward to the endless opportunities my future could hold. I am fulfilling a communication major, a writing minor, and a related area in public relations/advertising with two honors. As an aspiring professional I have gained a variety of skills that have prepared me for a future career in the communication field. I have chosen three pieces of writing to feature my different, professional skills. I have chosen a memo, a press release, and a paper about social media persuasion.
The memo I have written displays my ability to write memos for their intended use. The memo shows my skill for coming up with creative ideas and constructing them into a professional manner. This memo coordinates strongly with advertising and marketing. I have written a convincing argument for an idea that I came up with. I used skills that would help this idea become successful in convincing a brand to choice the celebrity endorsement of my choice with evidence to back up my claims as to why. Portraying these skills will help me if my future leads me to a job in marketing/advertising in which I have much interest in.
The press release I have written displays my ability to write successful press releases. This piece displays my ability to convince a journalist that my story is interesting and worthy enough for them to publish a piece on. It shows my ability to follow reverse pyramid structure, as well as being able to grab a readers attention from the very beginning. It also demonstrates my ability to conduct research accordingly in completion of a task to let my voice be heard. This piece proves my attention to detail as every sentence was formed intelligently and with careful revision. If I were to obtain a job similar to my dream job in the communication field, specifically Public Relations, this piece is a great representation of the skills a future employer would be looking for.
My social media persuasion paper displays my ability to use theoretical and scholarly ideas in regards to persuasion. This piece also reflects my ability to come up with creative ideas which I will need for a future career in my field. My knowledge and understanding of communication theories is also an important skill shown here. I was able to implement the theory to real-life and work to strengthen the theory as a whole. This paper demonstrates my knowledge regarding social media and the most recent forms of it being used in today's society. Social media is something I am very familiar with because I have grown up with it from a young age. Social media is important within the communication field and in understanding interpersonal communication styles.
Overall, the memo, press release, and social media persuasion paper represent a variety of important skills I possess that would make me a great asset to an organization in need of a communication professional. As I continue to gain experience, I look forward to putting my newly strengthened skills to use. I am eager to obtain and put to use my Bachelor's degree in Communication, Writing, and Public Relations/Advertising.
